Mamdani hails Indian-American Community on Independence Day
He said joining the India Day Parade in Queens was an unforgettable experience.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Aug. 15 joined India's Independence Day celebrations, recognizing the contributions of the Indian diaspora and highlighting the community's role in shaping the city.
Referring to former Mayor David Dinkins' description of New York City as a “gorgeous mosaic,” Mamdani said he saw that diversity reflected in the city's Indian community.

“Today, I saw that mosaic in the Hindus and Christians, Muslims and Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs across the Indian diaspora who have helped make our city what it is,” Mamdani said in a post on X.
He said joining the India Day Parade in Queens was an unforgettable experience.
“Today, I was back in Floral Park for the Queens India Day Parade — this time as the first Indian American mayor of New York City. It was an experience I will never forget,” he said.
He also acknowledged the community's contributions to the city and expressed his appreciation for working alongside its members.

“To all of them, I say: it is an honor to do that work alongside you,” he said, concluding his message with: “Happy Indian Independence Day!”
Several programmes were held across the New York tri-state area and other parts of the US to mark India's Independence Day.
The events were attended by members of the Indian-American community, elected representatives and business and community leaders.
The New York tri-state area refers to the greater metropolitan region of New York City spanning New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
