The Indian Community Foundation of Kentucky (ICF) celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day on Aug. 16, 2026, at the Tom Sawyer Community Hall in Louisville.
The event marked what ICF described as a new beginning for the organization as nearly 400 members of the community gathered for an evening of patriotic and cultural celebrations.
The celebrations began with the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by chief guest Amar Singla, followed by the Indian National Anthem performed by children from the Hindi Pathshala School. Meera rendered the United States National Anthem, reflecting the community’s connection to both its Indian heritage and the country it calls home.

In his welcome address, ICF president Deepak Tiwari reflected on the significance of celebrating India’s Independence Day away from the homeland and the enduring emotional connection members of the Indian diaspora maintain with India. He spoke about the sacrifices of those who contributed to India’s freedom and described the national flag as a symbol of the country’s history, identity and aspirations for future generations.
Tiwari also highlighted ICF’s mission of bringing people together, celebrating Indian culture and traditions, supporting one another and strengthening community connections for future generations.
A ceremonial lamp-lighting ceremony was held with community members Balwinder Singh, Rajan Amin, Zareen Khan and Dr. Juneja.
The event was supported by the ICF executive team, board members, volunteers and community members. Shagun Singh received special appreciation for coordinating the event.
The evening concluded with a message of unity and hope, as Tiwari called on the community to continue celebrating both India’s freedom and the unity of the Indian community in Kentucky, with more opportunities and events planned for the future.
