Social media has gone into a tizzy as news broke about the high-stakes meeting between the United States President Donald Trump and New York Mayor-elect Zohran-Mamdani. What looks like a plot straight out of a Bollywood movie, the duo went from bitter enemies to friends...or so it seems, in a matter of hours.

Mamdani's election campaign was marred by the President's constant attacks and threats. President Trump had threatened New Yorkers with federal aid cuts and other dire consequences if Mamdani was elected. The Nov. 21 meeting, however, changed the script and Trump has even went on to claim that he would be comfortable living in New York with Mamdani as the city's Mayor.

The social media reactions were largely of shock, with the meeting even inviting a meme-fest on the duo's 'frenemies' trope. A social media user shared a meme on the issue, the meme described both Democrats and Republicans calling Mamdani a jihadist who will end America and Trump, depicted using a Demi Lovato video, saying, "I love this man, and I have to have him."

Other users remarked that Trump doesn't function based on fixed ideologies and he aligns with whoever he considers to be a winner. Another user hailed Trump for his vision in identifying that the tide was in Mamdani's favour and quickly aligning himself to better benefit from Mamdani's popularity. The same post also called out "moronic democrats" for not being as good as Trump in terms of managing optics.

Social media also hailed Mamdani for pulling off "an absolute political masterclass", in spite of being dubbed as a political novice, saying, "He requested a meeting with Trump, got Trump to endorse his efforts and defanged the Right's constant attack on him."

Trump shared photos of the meeting and captioned them, "It was a Great Honor meeting Zohran Mamdani, the new Mayor of New York City!"

New York's Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, hailed the outcomes of the meeting and said, "I welcome President Trump’s renewed commitment today to New York’s success and his acknowledgment of our shared priorities: lowering costs and improving public safety."

Hochul added, "I also appreciate that the President rejected efforts by members of his own party to weaponize the mayor-elect’s background, faith, and identity for political gain, including the Islamophobic attacks labeling him a 'jihadist"."

However, Hochul ended the post on a sterner note, cautioning that she will fight Trump if the values of New York are at stake.
