The Hamilton Police Service Homicide Unit has identified the victim of a homicide investigation as 29-year-old Taranpreet Singh Sidhu of Brampton, Ontario, according to an official news release issued by the force.

Sidhu, an Indian-origin truck driver, immigrated to Canada in 2022 and had lived in both Brampton and Halifax, according to the Hamilton Police release.

His body was found in a culvert near the north end of Fruitland Road in the Stoney Creek area of Hamilton on the morning of July 15, after emergency services responded at approximately 8:15 a.m. to a report of an unresponsive person, Hamilton Police said.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Following the initial investigation, detectives have confirmed Mr. Sidhu's death is the result of a homicide," Hamilton Police said in the release, adding that investigators are not releasing the cause of death at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.

Police said they are confident Sidhu "was not killed in the area where he was found," and that detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Hamilton Police Service said it continues to work closely with the Peel Regional Police Service, which has provided investigative resources to assist the homicide unit.

Investigators have conducted an extensive video canvass of the area where Sidhu's body was located and continue to review surveillance and digital evidence while interviewing witnesses to establish his movements before his death, police said.

Detectives said they are not yet prepared to release information regarding the vehicle believed to have been used to transport Sidhu's body to the location where it was found.

Police are appealing to anyone who had contact with Sidhu, or who has information about his movements leading up to his death, to come forward.

Those with surveillance, dash-camera or doorbell-camera footage that could assist the investigation have been asked to contact the Hamilton Police Homicide Unit at 905-546-2288 or by email to Detective Lindsay Filice at lfilice1215@hamiltonpolice.ca.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers Hamilton at 1-800-222-8477 or online, police said.

The case has drawn attention among Indian diaspora and Punjabi community networks in Ontario given Sidhu's background as a recent immigrant working in the trucking industry, a sector with a significant Indian-origin workforce presence in Canada.

No further details about a suspect or motive have been released by police as of this report.
