Indian-origin CSUN professor wins Fulbright award for research in Brazil
Chhandak Basu will collaborate with Professor Igor Cesarino at the University of São Paulo in Brazil during the summers of 2025 and 2026.

Chhandak Basu, an Indian-origin professor of cell and molecular biology at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), has been awarded a Distinguished Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research in Brazil. The recognition, granted by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, places him among a select group of scholars globally.
Basu teaches in CSUN’s College of Science and Mathematics and specializes in how plants and microbes respond to environmental extremes. His work has been supported by NASA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He told CSUN, “There was also a moment of disbelief because I had been selected in the distinguished category, which is highly competitive and awarded to only a handful of recipients.”
