The Consulate General of India, Shanghai honored acclaimed filmmakers Kiran Rao and Rima Das in a special event during the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF).
Rao, also a jury member for the SIFF Golden Goblet Awards, was recognized for her contributions to socially driven cinema and her work with the Paani Foundation. Das was felicitated for her recent induction as a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, acknowledging her commitment to grassroots filmmaking.

Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards, and Das’s Village Rockstars, a previous Oscar entry, were lauded for their international acclaim and authentic storytelling.
The felicitation ceremony was part of an event hosted in collaboration with the Indian Association, to highlight India’s growing influence at SIFF, with screenings of newly restored classic Awara, sports biopic Chandu Champion, independent feature Second Chance, and debut director Sivaranjini J.'s Victoria, competing in the Asian New Talent section.

An engaging conversation moderated by producer and cultural adviser Prasad Shetty explored themes of social impact, creative process, and the growing India-China cinematic connection. Rao emphasized the role of strong female narratives, while Das reflected on her journey as a self-taught filmmaker.
The event underscored the enduring popularity of Indian cinema in China, reaffirming its cultural resonance and commercial appeal through hits like Dangal, 3 Idiots, and Secret Superstar, which continue to bridge audiences across borders.
