Union minister for the Department of Space Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will conduct exclusive food and nutrition related experiments onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Shukla, a Lucknow-born Indian Air Force (IAF) test pilot, is poised to become the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Space’s fourth commercial mission, Axiom-4 (Ax-4).
Operating in collaboration with ISRO and NASA, axiom has scheduled the launch for Jun. 8, 2025 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Shukla’s first ISS experiment will examine the impact of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae, a potential nutrient-rich food source.
The Department of Biotechnology has developed specialized kits tailored for experimentation in microgravity conditions.
Shukla’s second experiment would study the growth and the response of proteins of cyanobacteria in microgravity conditions.
Shukla was selected for ISRO’s Human Spaceflight Program in 2019. His training included a year at Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and further preparation at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and India’s Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru.
The microgravity experiments seek to revolutionize human nutrition in space. The mission seeks to elevate India’s standing in the global space race and lays the groundwork for ISRO’s future manned missions.
