Syam Kosigi, an Indian American IT professional and longtime community volunteer, is running for the New Castle County Council seat representing District 5 in Delaware. Kosigi, who moved to the United States from India nearly three decades ago and has lived in Newark for the past 20 years, said he decided to enter the race after concluding that residents' concerns were not being adequately addressed.

Kosigi has spent more than two decades volunteering with Sewa International USA, where he has worked on homeless shelters, disaster relief, refugee empowerment and youth service programs. He also serves on the Christina School District Citizens Budget Oversight Committee, where he participates in budget reviews and financial planning.

According to his campaign, Kosigi built a career in the information technology industry before expanding his involvement in community service. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped mobilize volunteers to produce and distribute masks in local communities and hospitals and participated in FEMA-led vaccination drives.

He has also held leadership positions with Sewa International USA, including serving as vice president of organization and vice president of administration and human resources.

Kosigi said his decision to run was driven by concerns he observed in District 5.

"I observed that many long-standing issues in District 5 remain unresolved, and residents increasingly feel that their concerns are not being heard," he said.

"People describe a lack of communication and almost no meaningful interaction with the current council leadership."

He also pointed to issues he believes require greater attention, including proposed hyperscale data centers, preservation of open space, environmental impacts, pressures on local businesses, and rising property taxes and utility bills.

"Seeing this gap firsthand, I felt compelled to step forward," Kosigi said.

"I believe I can bring a new approach, new ideas, and a commitment to act as the community's eyes, ears, and voice — so residents are finally represented the way they deserve."

Kosigi holds a master's degree in physics and electronics from Osmania University in India and an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business.

According to his campaign, his commitment to public service was shaped by his family. His mother was a teacher, while his father, a senior engineer, spent more than 30 years running schools in underserved neighborhoods.

Kosigi lives in Newark with his family. His campaign says he practices yoga and meditation and credits his wife, Sree, and their children as a source of support while he seeks to represent District 5 on the New Castle County Council.
