Indian American kids from NJ win Odyssey of the Mind World Championship

They became the first in their school history to win the Championship.

A team of Indian American students from Martin Luther King (MLK) Elementary School in Edison, New Jersey, won the first place at the 2025 Odyssey of the Mind World Championship, a global creative problem solving competition. 

The team consisted of Aarika Shukla, Akshara Deshpande, Amay Maheswari, Anika Dubey, Burhanuddin Jaorawala, Sahashra Saravanan, and Saket Kalangi secured the top spot at the finals held last month at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan.

The—4th and 5th graders—guided by their coach, MLK teacher Kim Kai-Cheng Poon, excelled in both technical and artistic elements of the competition beating teams from across the U.S. and countries including Sweden, Poland, China, Singapore, India, and South Korea.

They won in Division 1 for the “Save the Structure” challenge, with their balsa wood structure that held an astonishing 1,095 pounds. Teams then had to present a skit or story that incorporated the structure and their original skit, complete with handmade costumes and props, won accolades from judges. 

Odyssey of the Mind is a global creative problem-solving competition that brings together students from around the world to showcase ingenuity, teamwork, and innovation. The competition progresses from Regional to State levels, culminating in the World Finals.
