Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force became the first Indian to set foot on the ISS. On July 14 as he embarked on his return journey to Earth, in his final address Shukla evoked Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma’s legendary phrase to describe how India looks from space: “saare jahan se acha” (most beautiful in the world).

Lucknow-born Shukla was selected to be part of a four-member crew that was sent to the ISS in a private space mission by Axiom, in collaboration with ISRO and NASA.
