India gets its 87th chess grandmaster

Harikrishnan A RA has officially become India’s 87th Grandmaster after securing his third and final GM norm at the 2025 La Plagne International Chess Festival in France.
The 23-year-old from Chennai completed the requirements for the title on July 11, finishing third in the tournament with 5.5 points out of a possible nine.

Harikrishnan gained 16 rating points at the event, ensuring he remained above the required 2500 Elo rating mark set by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for the Grandmaster title. He placed behind GM Yuri Solodovnichenko and GM P Iniyan in the final standings.
A FIDE-certified trainer himself, Harikrishnan has been training under Grandmaster Shyam Sundar for the past three years. “Congratulations to Harikrishnana R A in becoming India’s latest grandmaster,” Shyam said.
Harikrishnan had secured his first two GM norms and crossed the 2500 rating threshold in June 2024, completing all formal requirements over a consistent period of play.
