Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) has received approval from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish an independent, degree-granting campus in the country.

The Illinois Tech–Mumbai campus is set to open in fall 2026, offering undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science, engineering, and business.

The announcement marks a historic milestone in U.S.-India educational collaboration, aligning with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages international partnerships to expand access to high-quality education.

“Our new campus in India represents a profound opportunity to continue that noble mission in service of the millions of talented young people across India, empowering them to become global leaders ready to make a difference,” said Illinois Tech president Raj Echambadi.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the initiative, noting it reinforces Mumbai’s role as a financial and innovation hub.

“Illinois Tech will become the first American institution to establish a campus in India, and I am proud that they have chosen Mumbai as their location. This milestone not only reflects Illinois Tech’s pioneering spirit but also underscores Mumbai’s role as India’s financial and innovation capital, fostering strong industry partnerships and creating transformative opportunities for students and employers alike,” Fadnavis said.

“This is a transformative moment—not just for Illinois Tech, but for global higher education. In the last five years, we’ve seen more than a 73% increase in graduate students from India choosing Illinois Tech. Our new campus responds to this extraordinary demand by delivering globally recognized Illinois Tech degrees in India, in a highly accessible, affordable, and locally contextualized format,”said Mallik Sundharam, vice president for enrollment management.

The Mumbai campus will mirror the university’s rigorous curriculum and offer access to its acclaimed Elevate program, which integrates academic study with internships, research, and global experiences. Courses will be taught by internationally recruited faculty, including professors from Illinois Tech’s Chicago campus.

The Illinois Tech–Mumbai campus is expected to serve as a model for future U.S.-India educational ventures, fostering innovation and global leadership through accessible, world-class STEM education.
