The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has partnered with Texas-based Bhupat & Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF) to establish two new academic schools focused on sustainability and biomedical engineering.
Launched at a formal ceremony in New Delhi, the Mehta Family School of Sustainability and the Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering span over 200,000 square feet. Each school is projected to serve more than 1,500 students.

The School of Sustainability introduces India’s first BTech program in environmental economics and sustainable engineering. It will also host three Centers of Excellence in Energy Systems, Environmental Economics and Law, and Water and Climate Studies, aiming to train over 1,400 professionals in the next decade.
The biomedical school will serve as a data-driven healthcare innovation hub, offering programs in AI in healthcare, drug discovery, biomanufacturing, and wearable technologies. It plans to address challenges such as endemic diseases and antimicrobial resistance, while supporting India’s biotechnology sector through a new biomanufacturing hub.
“India's future hinges on nurturing institutions that can create intellectual talent to address challenges such as climate resilience and innovative healthcare. IIT Indore, located at the heart of India, has all the right ingredients to nurture the next generation of talent capable of addressing both the nation's immediate challenges and future aspirations,” said Indian-American founder of MFF, Rahul Mehta.
The initiative has been backed by the Government of India, with dignitaries including Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, and Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, lauding its alignment with national priorities.
“The Mehta Family Foundation's ability to identify thematic areas that closely mirror the government's science and technology priorities is commendable. Such efforts strengthen India's innovation ecosystem and contribute meaningfully to our long-term national goals in research and education,” Karandikar said.
The Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation, headquartered in Houston, Texas, was established by Nisha, Rahul, Jainesh and his wife Mamta, and Dharmesh and his wife Archana, in honor of their parents, Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta of Mumbai, India. Inspired by their parents’ belief in the transformative power of education, the Foundation has spent over two decades supporting global initiatives that enhance healthcare and educational access, funding more than 100 organizations worldwide.
