Houston marks Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary

The program also included cultural performances and a special presentation marking 150 years of “Vande Mataram.”

The B.R. Ambedkar International Mission Center (AIM) Houston celebrated the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on May 16 in Houston, Texas.

Organized at the GSH Event Center on Bellfort Avenue, the event featured discussions on Dr. Ambedkar’s life, vision and lasting legacy.

B.R. Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, social reformer and the chief architect of the Constitution of India. He played a key role in fighting caste discrimination and championing the rights of Dalits, women and other marginalized communities.

The commemorative event was also attended by representatives of the Consulate General of India in Houston. Additionally, the keynote address for the celebration was delivered by Consul General D.C. Manjunath.

CGI Manjunath highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s role in advancing women’s empowerment, particularly in the civil services, and called on the community to uphold the values of justice, equality and social inclusion.

The program also included cultural performances and a special presentation marking 150 years of “Vande Mataram.”

The consulate also curated an exhibition on the Constitution of India, highlighting its foundational principles and continued relevance, and thanked AIM, supporting organizations and members of the Indian diaspora for participating in the event.

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Mission (AIM) Center was established in Houston, Texas, to promote Dr. Ambedkar’s ideology and his struggle for the human rights of 300 million Dalits, untouchables and tribals in India.

The organization also serves as a research and community center in Houston focused on social justice, education and Ambedkar’s writings.
