Birkbeck, University of London, has opened a new campus in Bengaluru, enabling students in India to earn a University of London degree without relocating overseas.

The campus, inaugurated on April 14, is located in Sattva Tech Park in Bengaluru, a major technology and business hub. It will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in business management and business analytics, with degrees recognized globally by employers.

Students will receive research-informed teaching and applied learning linked to real-world business practice, delivered by research-active academics, according to the university.

Vice-chancellor Sally Wheeler said the launch followed approval from the Government of India and marked a step toward expanding access to Birkbeck’s education model internationally.

“I am delighted that the Government of India has given Birkbeck, University of London permission to open a campus in Bengaluru and I would like to thank all who have been involved in supporting us to do so,” Wheeler said.

She added that the institution aims to provide students in India with the same quality of education available in the United Kingdom.

Alison Barrett, country director India at the British Council, said the expansion reflects growing UK–India education cooperation.

“I warmly congratulate Birkbeck, University of London on its expansion into Bengaluru — a significant milestone in advancing UK–India higher education collaboration,” Barrett said.

She said the move aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020 and the India-UK Vision 2035, aimed at expanding access to globally recognized education and building future-ready skills.

The British High Commission in India said Birkbeck is the 10th UK university to open a branch campus in India, describing the UK as a “trusted partner” in supporting India’s education reforms under the National Education Policy 2020.

Separately, the High Commission of India in London said the Bengaluru campus marks the 15th letter of intent issued to a foreign university under India’s 2023 University Grants Commission regulations and reinforces efforts to internationalize higher education within India.

Founded in 1823, Birkbeck has more than 200 years of experience in higher education and an alumni network of over 100,000 graduates worldwide. The Bengaluru campus is expected to enroll students in programs including BSc (Hons) Business Management, BSc (Hons) Business Analytics, MA International Business Management, and MSc Business Analytics.
