The University of California, Berkeley honored Indian-origin executive Arjun Singh with the 2026 Mark Bingham Award for Excellence in Achievement by Young Alumni, in recognition of his professional venture that impacted students worldwide.

Singh, who earned his doctorate in computer science from UC Berkeley in 2016, co-founded Gradescope in 2014 after identifying inefficiencies in grading while working as a graduate student.

Along with EECS professor Pieter Abbeel and fellow alumni, he developed an artificial intelligence-assisted grading platform designed to speed up grading and provide instant feedback to students and instructors.

The platform was acquired by Turnitin in 2018 and helped institutions adapt to remote teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gradescope has since expanded globally and is now used by more than 150,000 instructors and 4 million students across 2,600 universities worldwide.

“We started Gradescope to increase the meaning and value of teaching at Berkeley, by letting instructors spend their time directly with students, rather than with a red pen in hand for hours,” Abbeel said. “Arjun more than achieved that early vision and spread it well beyond Berkeley. His work embodies the spirit of this award: putting service to his community above personal interests.”

Singh later served as vice president of STEM products and technology at Turnitin from October 2018 to May 2020, and as chief strategy officer from May 2020 to April 2021, both based in Oakland, California. He is currently the CEO and co-founder of Superconductor, a role he has held since June 2025.

As an undergraduate student instructor at UC Berkeley, Singh where he led lab and discussion sections for computer science and electrical engineering courses.

Singh holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences UC Berkeley from the same institution. He attended Green Valley High School.

The award will be presented by the UC Berkeley Foundation and the Cal Alumni Association at the Berkeley Charter Gala on May 21.

It honors young alumni who have made a significant contribution to their community, country, or the world and commemorates Mark Bingham, a 1993 graduate who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks aboard United Airlines Flight 93.
