Siva Gunda reappointed to California Energy Commission

Gunda has served on the commission since 2021 and currently holds the position of vice chair.

California Governor Gavin Newsom reappointed Siva Gangadhar Gunda of Davis to the California Energy Commission on Dec. 12.

Gunda has served on the commission since 2021. He was first appointed as the commission’s public member in February 2021 and was elevated to vice chair later that year.

In his role, Gunda serves as lead commissioner for energy assessments, energy reliability, long-term electricity planning under Senate Bill 100, demand analysis and data initiatives. His responsibilities include overseeing forecasts and assessments of California’s energy demand and supply.

Before joining the commission as a member, Gunda held several senior roles at the California Energy Commission between 2017 and 2021, including deputy director of the Energy Assessments Division and manager of the Demand Analysis Office.

From 2011 to 2017, he worked at the University of California, Davis Energy and Efficiency Institute, where he served in multiple capacities, including director of research and director of research and India initiatives, overseeing research operations and strategic collaborations.

Gunda’s professional background also includes experience with General Electric, the California Fuel Cell Partnership, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and the California Air Resources Board. He has previously been named an Edison International Energy Efficiency Fellow and held sustainability and entrepreneurship fellowships within the University of California system.

He holds a master of science degree in mechanical and aeronautical engineering from Utah State University and a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University.

His reappointment requires confirmation by the California State Senate. The position carries an annual compensation of $215,631. According to the governor’s office, Gunda is not registered to vote.
