The iconic Indian restaurant, “New Delhi,” in San Francisco, California, will be hosting Indian American Democrat and congressional hopeful Saikat Chakrabarti's public gathering on April 19.

Inviting all South Asians to show up, Chakrabarti said, “We’re having our next event at 1 o’clock this Sunday, right here at New Delhi Restaurant.”

He continued, “Chef Ranjan Dey graciously cooked some free meals for everybody, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The campaign event hosted by New Delhi restaurant, one of the oldest Indian restaurants in the region, will feature food made by acclaimed chef Ranjan Dey along with Bollywood music and the opportunity to pose questions and interact with Chakrabarti.

First opened in 1988 and inaugurated by then-San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos, the restaurant is not new to political attention. In 1992, future President Bill Clinton made a stop during his first presidential campaign and met Indians of the Bay Area to listen to their issues.

He returned in 1996 during his re-election campaign, and New Delhi Restaurant has been a favorite spot for political fundraisers ever since.

Apart from Clinton, political figures including Lt. Gov. Pete Wilson, former Gov. Jerry Brown, and numerous others, including Milton Marks and Willie Brown, have been part of Chef Dey’s clientele, meeting the community and raising support from them.

Chef Dey, the owner of the iconic eatery, started his career in the food business at the age of 14 at Calcutta’s Park Hotel as a vegetable cutter. After finishing high school, he graduated from the Institute of Catering Technology, Hotel Management and Applied Nutrition.

But during all this, he kept his part-time evening job in different hotels. He then worked at the Grand and Great Eastern hotels in Calcutta before moving to New Delhi, where he worked in Akbar and Janpath hotels, decades before finally moving to San Francisco and opening the New Delhi restaurant.

Urging people to attend the event, Chakrabarti posted on X, “Bring your friends, questions, and come in your finest cultural attire. Let’s fill the room with good food and even better people.”

Chakrabarti, who was born to Indian Bengali parents in Texas, is contesting for San Francisco CA-11, the seat now left unfilled by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi after she announced her decision not to contest the upcoming midterms.
