Virginia Congressman Suhas Subramanyam on Jan. 29 marked one year since the deadly midair collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, that claimed 67 lives.
Calling for swift action on federal safety recommendations, Subramanyam said the past year has been “unimaginably difficult” for the families and loved ones of the victims, several of whom were Northern Virginia residents or had ties to the region.

He noted that even in their grief, families have continued to push for accountability and reforms to prevent similar tragedies.
His remarks came days after the National Transportation Safety Board released recommendations concluding that the crash was “entirely preventable.” Subramanyam said the findings offer little comfort to families but underscore the urgency of implementing the safety measures outlined by the board.
“My colleagues and I will work to quickly implement the NTSB’s recommendations to ensure something like this never happens again,” he said, adding that Congress and federal agencies must continue efforts to keep the airspace around the nation’s capital safe and secure.
Last year, the Military and Foreign Affairs Oversight Subcommittee concluded its investigation into the collision and released a report examining the Department of Defense’s use of civilian airspace. Subramanyam serves as the ranking member of the subcommittee.
The collision on Jan. 29, 2025, involved an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet, killing all aboard both aircraft.
The crash occurred over the Potomac River as the jet was approaching the airport and was the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2001.
