New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined worshippers celebrating Eid al-Adha in the Bronx on May 27, appearing in a custom Arsenal-inspired thobe that drew attention online for blending football imagery with traditional Eid clothing.

Mamdani attended the celebration alongside fellow Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. During the public appearance, he wore a modified version of Arsenal Football Club’s blue away jersey redesigned into a kurta-style garment extending below the knees. The outfit featured the club crest, the “Emirates Fly Better” sponsor logo and red sleeve stripes associated with Arsenal’s 2025-26 away kit.

The garment appeared to adapt Arsenal’s away shirt into a traditional thobe or kurta for the Eid celebration.

Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim mayor and a longtime Arsenal supporter, later shared photographs from the event on X and linked the themes of Eid al-Adha to his political message.

“Today as we honor Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden,” Mamdani wrote. “It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most.”

“I am honored to be New York City's first Muslim Mayor and I am determined to lead through solidarity,” he added. “Together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and child care they need.”

He concluded the post by writing, “Our solidarity is our strength. Eid Saeed, New York.”

Eid al-Adha is one of Islam’s most significant religious holidays and follows Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. The festival commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice in obedience to God and is associated with charity, communal prayers and shared meals.

Mamdani’s appearance quickly generated discussion online because of the unusual combination of football culture and traditional Eid attire. The mayor has frequently referenced Arsenal in public appearances and social media posts, though the Eid outfit marked one of his most visible displays of support for the English club since taking office.

The attention also came during a successful period for Mamdani’s favored sports teams. Arsenal recently won the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years and are preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30. The New York Knicks also advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
