Krishan Kumar to receive NYIT honorary degree

He is being recognized for his contributions to medical education, mentorship, and clinical practice.

Indian American clinical professor Krishan Kumar will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the New York Institute of Technology’s 65th commencement ceremony on May 17.

The university said the honor recognizes Kumar’s contributions to medical education, mentorship, and clinical practice.

“Krishan Kumar’s distinguished career embodies a lifelong commitment to compassionate care, medical education, and service, as well as a deep dedication to our students and the future of medicine,” said Jerry Balentine, president of the New York Institute of Technology.

Kumar serves as a clinical professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and joined the faculty in 2011. He is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board. In 2024, he established the Kumar Family Scholarship to support a fourth-year medical student.

He previously served as chair and program director of pediatrics at Nassau University Medical Center and associate professor of pediatrics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and has held attending physician positions in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian Queens and Coney Island Hospital. 

Kumar is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics. He is also a member of the New York State Board of Medicine and serves as vice president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

His recognitions include being named among America’s Top Pediatricians by the Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2010 and receiving the Medical Director of Excellence Award from the Nassau County Fire Police EMS Academy, along with multiple congressional citations from New York representatives.

Kumar earned his medical degree from Kanpur Medical College in 1977 and emigrated to the United States in 1984. He completed his residency at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, where he became associate director of emergency medicine in 1988.
