Kedar Mate joins Blue Shield of California board
In his new role, he will help advance Blue Shield of California’s efforts to improve healthcare quality, affordability, accessibility, innovation and patient safety.

California-based nonprofit health insurer Blue Shield of California has appointed Indian-American physician and healthcare innovation leader Kedar S. Mate to its board of directors.
Mate, who has more than two decades of experience in healthcare quality, patient safety, innovation and health system transformation, co-founded Qualified Health AI, a digital health company focused on helping healthcare organizations safely and effectively deploy artificial intelligence technologies.
Before founding the company, Mate served as president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, an international organization focused on healthcare quality and patient safety. He has also advised healthcare organizations, government agencies and global institutions, including the World Health Organization and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Mate has held leadership and advisory positions with organizations including MLK Community Health System, Healthcare Excellence Canada and the Center for Care Innovations. He also has been involved with the National Academy of Medicine's Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct initiative.
Commenting on his new role, Mate said, “I'm thrilled to join the Board of Directors and look forward to supporting the nonprofit organization's mission and commitment to providing access to quality healthcare that’s sustainably affordable for all.”
Mate, a senior scholar at Stanford University's Clinical Excellence Research Center, practices internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and serves on the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine.
Blue Shield of California board chair Pamela DeCoste said Mate's experience as a physician, healthcare executive and innovator would bring valuable perspective as the organization works to make healthcare more affordable and accessible.
"His experience as a physician, healthcare executive, and innovator will bring valuable perspective as Blue Shield continues working to make healthcare more affordable, accessible, and worthy of our family and friends,” DeCoste said.
Mate earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a bachelor's degree in American history from Brown University.
