Indian-origin engineer Arun Rajkumar joins Mercedes podium

An Indian-origin engineer was among those on the podium at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix on June 29 after Mercedes secured a one-three finish at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.

Arun Rajkumar, Trackside Power Unit Engineer at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, represented the team on the podium following its constructors' result. He stood alongside race winner George Russell, runner-up Max Verstappen of Red Bull and third-placed Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli.

Russell converted pole position into victory, holding off late pressure from Verstappen to claim his second win of the season. Verstappen finished 1.611 seconds behind, while championship leader Antonelli completed the podium for Mercedes, 0.375 seconds behind the Red Bull driver.

Rajkumar provides trackside engineering support and oversees the performance and reliability of Mercedes' power unit during race weekends.

He joined Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains as a placement student while pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Birmingham. During the placement, he worked across several engineering rotations, including with the internal combustion engine team, before progressing to his current role as Trackside Power Unit Engineer.

Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, based in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, designs, manufactures, tests and races Formula 1 power units for the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS team, as well as customer teams McLaren, Williams and Aston Martin.

The next round of the 2026 Formula 1 season is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, which will be held as a Sprint weekend.
