American DJ and music producer Diplo has shared memories from an early chapter of his music career in India, reflecting on how the experience shaped his creative journey, in a recent Instagram post.
Thomas Wesley Pentz, known professionally as Diplo, revisited his first trip to India in his 20s, a period he has previously described as influential to his artistic development. He has often spoken about the country’s importance in his life and career, noting his continued return for performances.

In the post, Diplo shared photos and videos from a DJ set performed on the banks of a river in Rishikesh. Accompanying the visuals, he described DJing as a journey that should “make you happy,” “make you wonder,” and spark curiosity. He wrote that his path into music was unconventional and rooted in searching for sounds and places that inspired him.
Recalling his early attempts at making hip-hop, Diplo detailed how his interest shifted toward finding music sources, from record shops in the United States to markets and back alleys abroad, including New Delhi. He wrote that, over time, the inspiration came not just from vinyl records but from the places where music had been created decades earlier.
Reflecting on his time in Rishikesh, Diplo described traveling for a month while “broke and hungry,” staying in a yoga studio and exploring the city years after the Beatles’ visit. He characterized himself as an adventure seeker rather than a spiritual traveler, recounting a risky swim in the river that ended with a lesson learned.
The post concluded with a teaser: “Part two and (maybe a full set from the river) next week.”
