Indian-American obstetrician-gynecologist Hetal Gor assumed charge as chair of the board of trustees (BOT) of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) during its 43rd annual convention held in Cincinnati from July 26.
In her inaugural address, Gor reflected on her decade-long journey in AAPI, culminating in her new leadership role. Outlining her vision, she announced monthly medical-legal webinars in partnership with the South Asian Bar Association (SABA) and a focus on integrative wellness to combat physician burnout. Outgoing AAPI president Satheesh Kathula praised Kaza and welcomed Gor’s leadership. AAPI Service Awards were presented to distinguished physicians, including Drs. Navin Nanda, PK Vedantham, and Avi Singh Gandhi.
Keynote speaker and Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval shared his personal story as the son of Tibetan and Indian immigrants, lauding AAPI’s role in uplifting the Indian-American community.
Gor took over from Sunil Kaza, who reflected on his term, stating, “You can learn to prevent the storm, or you can learn to ride the storm! If you can learn how to ride the storm, the storm is not a problem anymore. We decided to ride the storm! We decided to right the ship.”
Highlighting key accomplishments, Kaza noted initiatives such as scholarships through the Kakani Fund, support for young physicians and residents, legal and ethical reforms, and collaboration with India’s Health Ministry on emergency medicine improvements.
Under Kaza’s leadership, AAPI supported HPV awareness campaigns, raised over $75,000 for health and education causes, and laid the groundwork for the AAPI Global Foundation.
