The Hindu University of America (HUA) conferred its inaugural Honorary Doctorate in Hindu Stewardship on Houston-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Ramesh Bhutada at a special ceremony held last month.

The award was presented on May 9 at VPSS Haveli in Houston and is believed to be the first degree of its kind in the world.

Instituted by HUA, the Honorary Doctorate in Hindu Stewardship recognizes individuals whose lives embody responsibility, service, philanthropy, and the preservation of Hindu institutions and traditions.

The university said the degree draws on Hindu concepts including Dharma, Dana (sacred giving), Seva (selfless service), Niskama Karma (action without attachment to results), and Lokasaṃgraha, or the welfare and cohesion of society.

Bhutada was selected as the inaugural recipient in recognition of a lifetime of entrepreneurship, community leadership, and contributions to Hindu causes in the United States and beyond.

The formal citation accompanying the award recognized his commitment to Dharma, his embodiment of Dana as a sacred responsibility, and his efforts to strengthen Hindu institutions, community life, and civilizational continuity.

A commemorative film presented during the ceremony traced Bhutada's journey from India to the United States and highlighted his role in building Star Pipe Products from a one-employee operation in the early 1980s into a company employing more than 3,000 people.

The presentation also reflected on his support for numerous Hindu organizations, institutions, and community initiatives across the country.

Bhutada is the chief executive officer of Star Pipe Products and serves as a director of Sewa International. He is also the founder and director of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce and founding president of the SVYASA Research Foundation.

Over the years, he has emerged as one of the most prominent supporters of Hindu educational, cultural, and community institutions in the United States.

In 2024, Bhutada donated $1 million to HUA, a graduate-level institution dedicated to the academic study of Hindu thought, culture, practice, and civilization. At the time, he emphasized the importance of institutions that help younger generations understand and apply Hindu philosophy in their lives.

He has also supported advocacy efforts through the Hindu American Foundation (HAF). During a fundraising event in Houston, a $1 million contribution from Bhutada was announced, while participants at the gathering raised an additional $450,000 to support initiatives serving Hindu communities in the United States.

Accepting the doctorate, Bhutada said he viewed his contributions as part of his duty and urged attendees to continue investing in institutions that could serve future generations.

“I was merely doing my duty, which translates as Dharma in Sanskrit,” Bhutada said, calling on the audience to foster Hindu unity and support institutions that can strengthen the Hindu ecosystem for generations to come.

HUA president Kalyan Viswanathan said the award was designed to recognize individuals whose service extends beyond philanthropy to the long-term preservation of values and institutions.

“At its heart, the Honorary Doctorate in Hindu Stewardship reflects a simple yet profound principle. The world is not ours merely to consume; it is ours to care for, uphold, and transmit to future generations,” Viswanathan said. “The degree is not merely an acknowledgment of charitable giving – rather, it recognizes lives dedicated to sustaining that which supports human flourishing and civilizational continuity.”

The doctorate was conferred during HUA Samvada–2026, attended by more than 500 members of the Houston Hindu community

According to HUA, the initiative seeks to bring a distinctly Dharmic perspective to contemporary discussions on leadership, responsibility, philanthropy, and civilizational continuity while reaffirming the relevance of Hindu knowledge systems in the modern world.
