Kash Patel calls for FBI scrutiny of Swalwell

The latest development comes amid a longstanding rivalry between the two men dating back to their time on the House Intelligence Committee.

FBI Director Kash Patel invited former Representative Eric Swalwell to sit down with the bureau for questioning into sexual misconduct allegations, escalating a long-running feud hours after the California Democrat resigned.

Patel issued the invitation in a post on X, urging Swalwell to cooperate with federal authorities. “@EricSwalwell has maintained that none of the allegations against him are true, and now that he’s resigned, we would welcome him to sit down with the FBI and share any information he has,” Patel wrote.

“We also encourage and welcome any person with relevant information to any of these matters to speak with us. Door is open to all,” he added.

Swalwell’s resignation follows allegations from multiple women, including claims of sexual harassment, assault, and inappropriate relationships with subordinates.

He has denied the accusations, calling them “serious, false allegations,” while acknowledging unspecified “mistakes.”

Patel’s intervention builds on a series of actions involving Swalwell. The House Ethics Committee has opened an investigation, and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has confirmed a criminal probe.

The FBI director recently ordered a review of decade-old bureau files tied to Swalwell’s past association with Christine Fang, an alleged Chinese intelligence operative, a move Swalwell’s legal team called politically motivated.

The latest development comes amid a longstanding rivalry between the two men dating back to their time on the House Intelligence Committee during investigations into alleged ties between Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

Patel, then a senior aide to Chairman Devin Nunes, was a key critic of those inquiries, while Swalwell was among Democrats backing them.

In his book Government Gangsters, Patel named Swalwell among officials he has sharply criticized. The two have also clashed in congressional hearings, where Patel at one point described Swalwell’s congressional career as “a disgrace to the American people.”
