Italy remembers Sikh soldiers who made supreme sacrifices in its liberation war
Rich floral tributes were paid to Sikh soldiers who made supreme sacrifices in World War II for the liberation of Italy from German control.

Mayors of nearly 20 communes or cities were joined by senior defense officers, freedom fighters and other prominent civic and administrative functionaries, besides hundreds of Sikhs who have made Italy their home.
According to Prithipal Singh, president of the World Sikh Shaheed Military, Italy, a special event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the freedom struggle of Italy was held at Fauli City.
The program started with the recitation from Sri Guru Granth Sahib — Sri Sukhmani Sahib — by members of the Sikh congregation of Gurdwara Forli, which was followed by the recitation of shlokas, kirtan and other rituals, including "Ardas."
After completion of the religious ceremonies and Ardas, the Italian serving and retired defense officers, freedom fighters and senior civic officials joined the commemorations.
From the World Sikh Shaheed Military group, floral tributes were paid to the Sikh soldiers by Prithipal Singh, Satnam Singh, Jasbir Singh Dhanauta, Iqbal Singh, besides Karamjit Singh (president, Gurdwara Lene), Inderjit Singh Kala and Ravinder Singh Bhau also placed wreaths at the memorial where pictures of Sikh soldiers have been inscribed on a wall.
Then devotional songs dedicated to martyrs were played to eulogize their supreme sacrifices.
At the place where most of the Sikh soldiers laid down their lives during World War II, a wall carrying the names of most of the Sikh soldiers has been raised. The father of Forli offered prayers at the war memorial. It was followed by the recitation of the Sikh "Ardas" by Barjinder Singh.
The mayor of Forli, followed by the mayors of 20 other cities — communes — also offered floral tributes at the memorial.
Since it was observed as War Memorial Day, members of the Sikh community from various parts of Italy traveled to the venue carrying the holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib with them.
They traveled from Sun Jowani, Parma, Anukons (Guru Nanak Mission, Marke), Rome, Pantina, Vicenza, Lone and other Sikh gurdwaras. Members of all these gurdwara committees also joined in remembering Sikh soldiers for laying down their lives for a land and people far from their homes.
Senior representatives of the Indian diplomatic corps from Milan, too, joined the commemorative ceremony and paid tributes to Sikh soldiers.
Besides, mayors of Forli, Forli Popli, Fianca, Merkato, Stracchino, Pala Solo, Novolara, Modna and Moradi also attended, along with many Italians, including freedom fighters, ex-servicemen and others.
Besides the community kitchen (langar), there were special stalls that served sweetened water and fruit to those who attended the commemorative event.
Satnam Singh, secretary of the organizing committee, complimented all those who traveled from different parts of Italy to join the special memorial event recalling the great sacrifices by Sikh soldiers in upholding the true military traditions.
