Indian Student shot dead near Toronto University

The statement by the Toronto Police Service further suggested the suspect(s) fled the area prior to their arrival and remain at large.

Indian doctoral student, Shivank Avasthi, was found dead with a gunshot wound near the University of Toronto's Scarborough Campus on Dec. 23 by Toronto Police, who are probing the case as a homicide.

In an official statement, the Toronto Police Service mentioned that at about 3:34 p.m., officials responded to a call for an unknown trouble in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area and located the victim, who was pronounced deceased on scene.

The statement by the Toronto Police Service further suggested the suspect(s) fled the area prior to their arrival and remain at large.

Following the incident, the Consulate General of India in Toronto released a statement on X, extending their condolences and all necessary assistance in close coordination with the local authorities.



Avasthi’s death marks to be Toronto's 41st Homicide this year, with the previous one also being the murder of an Indian, Himanshi Khurana.
