Indian-origin couple arrested in Halifax after relative's baby goes missing

The couple will appear in Halifax provincial court on June 1 to face charges.

A day after police arrested Indian-origin Sukhpreet Singh and Ramandeep Kaur in connection with a missing baby case, the police found the remains of the baby, concluding the search, the Halifax police announced on May 24.

Sukhpreet Singh, a 23-year-old man who is a relative of the baby's mother, and his wife, 26-year-old Ramandeep Kaur, were arrested on May 23 and charged with Concealing the body of a child, Obstruction and Indignity to a dead body.

The police notified that new information redirected the search to Prospect Road and the surrounding area. The missing baby's remains were located in a wooded area off Old Coach Road.

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service will be conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The baby's 23-year-old mother is currently in the hospital and remains in critical condition.

Police believe the woman experienced a medical emergency and do not believe her condition is the result of violence.

Halifax police Chief Don MacLean talked about the incident and said in a statement, “Moments like this are among the most difficult for first responders. We feel the weight of this loss and are grieving with the community while working tirelessly to find answers."

Chief MacLean continued, "My sincere thanks go out to the officers and ground search and rescue teams for their dedication throughout this challenging search. I urge people to take care of themselves and reach out for support if they need it.”

The couple will appear in Halifax provincial court on June 1 to face charges.

Expressing condolences to the  infant’s loved ones, Halifax police highlighted that the investigation remains ongoing.
