Gita Gopinath, a former first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, warned that artificial intelligence could trigger job losses on a scale far exceeding those seen after the 2008 global financial crisis, particularly if a recession hits in the coming years.
Speaking at Harvard's ‘From The Studio’ FAS Symposium, Gopinath said the earlier “jobless recovery” in the United States and Western Europe was already unprecedented, as companies turned to automation instead of rehiring workers. She cautioned that current technological shifts could amplify that pattern.
