Gallup, an analytics and advisory company, and the Art of Living Foundation have announced a global research collaboration to study the impact of meditation on well-being.

The partnership seeks to create the first large-scale, globally representative dataset on meditation practices and their relationship with emotional health, stress, and overall wellbeing.

The announcement was made during World Meditation Day celebrations at the United Nations, which included a synchronized global meditation led by Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

The collaboration will integrate new meditation-related questions into Gallup’s World Poll, which has surveyed more than two million people across over 140 countries.

The expanded survey aims to enable global comparisons on how meditation correlates with emotional resilience, stress levels, and well-being outcomes across different populations.

Gallup CEO Jon Clifton said global data shows persistent emotional stress worldwide, noting that “negative emotions worldwide remain far above levels from a decade ago.” He said the partnership is designed to examine "a widely practiced but undermeasured aspect of well-being at a globally representative scale, meditation."

Ravi Shankar said the initiative reflects the need to integrate inner well-being into broader social progress. “Let’s resolve to meditate every day and bring it to every individual on this planet to create a happy and healthy society,” he said.

Millions of participants across 150 countries joined the guided meditation at the United Nations on Dec. 19, which was followed by his keynote speech to senior UN leaders and international representatives.

Findings from the Gallup-Art of Living study are expected to be released on World Meditation Day in Dec. 2026.
