Chanchalapathi Dasa, co-founder and vice chairman of the The Akshaya Patra Foundation, outlined the scale of food insecurity and its impact on students.
Speakers, including chef Vikas Khanna and Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, highlighted initiatives to provide hot meals to students across community colleges in New York, New Jersey, Boston, and California. Organizers said the program aims to scale up to serving one million meals annually across the United States by 2030.
Participants, including students and community members, shared accounts of food insecurity on campuses, with one beneficiary describing relief at no longer having to choose between meals and essential expenses.
The World Food Movement, a U.S.-based nonprofit inspired by the Akshaya Patra model, launched its meal initiative in 2025 to provide hot, nutritious food to students in community colleges and individuals in homeless shelters.
According to organizers, the program operates across multiple campuses, delivering thousands of meals per week, with outreach spanning several U.S. regions and targeted distribution for vulnerable communities.
The initiative draws on the operational model of the The Akshaya Patra Foundation, one of the world’s largest nonprofit-run school feeding programs. Founded in 2000, the organization provides mid-day meals to more than 2.2 million children daily in government and government-aided schools in India under the PM POSHAN Abhiyaan.
