Binghamton to confer honorary degree on Nana Banerjee
The honor recognizes Banerjee’s leadership in scaling global businesses across climate science, education, and data analytics sectors.

Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York (SUNY), will confer an honorary doctorate on Indian American executive Nana Banerjee during its May commencement ceremonies.
Banerjee, who earned a doctorate in 1996, will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters during the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science ceremony on May 15. The other honorees are William H. Groner and Susan Marenoff-Zausner.

A business executive and investor, Banerjee has led and advised companies across climate science, education, and data analytics sectors.
He previously served as chief executive officer of Pelmorex, known for climate science and public alerting systems, and of McGraw-Hill Education, where he oversaw global growth, the integration of data and technology into services, and its merger with Cengage.
His earlier roles include senior advisor to the CEO at Cerberus Capital Management, group president at Verisk, and chief operating officer at Argus. He also led Citibank’s credit card business in the United Kingdom and served as vice president of marketing at GE Capital.
Banerjee currently serves on several boards, including CoStar Group, the Binghamton University Foundation, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator. He has also chaired the boards of Comscore, Red River Technologies, and Northern Westchester Hospital.
During his time as a student at Binghamton, Banerjee worked on research partially funded by NASA focused on identifying cracks in aircraft. His work was published in the Journal of Scientific Computing, and he holds a U.S. patent related to monitoring and managing credit accounts.
He has also contributed to the university community by supporting initiatives such as the Peggy Slavik Summer Student Internship and the Professor Jim Greer Scholarship.
Banerjee completed his undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and earned a master’s degree in mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology before pursuing doctoral studies in systems science at Watson College.
All three honorary degree recipients will deliver remarks following the conferral of their degrees. The ceremonies will take place at the Events Center on the university’s campus in Vestal, New York.
The university said honorary degree nominees are evaluated through a multi-stage review process involving the President’s Honorary Degree Advisory Committee, the SUNY chancellor, the SUNY Honorary Degree Committee, and the SUNY Board of Trustees.
