JAINA mourns passing of revered Jain leader Acharya Shri Chandanaji

She founded Veerayatan in 1970, a voluntary organization focused on education, health, and social improvement

The Federation of Jain Associations in North America (JAINA) expressed profound grief over the passing of Acharya Shri Chandanaji, the revered founder of Veerayatan, who died on April 22 aged 90.

Widely known as “Tai Ma,” Acharya Shri Chandanaji was regarded as a spiritual leader who translated the teachings of Lord Mahaveer into large-scale humanitarian work. Through Veerayatan, she led initiatives spanning education for underprivileged children, accessible healthcare, eye care hospitals, vocational training, women’s empowerment, and disaster relief efforts, impacting underserved communities across India and beyond.

Under her leadership, Veerayatan grew into a globally respected institution grounded in the principles of seva (service), shiksha (education), and sadhana (spiritual growth). She was widely seen as a compassionate guide and maternal figure to followers around the world.

JAINA highlighted her close association with the organization, noting that she attended multiple JAINA conventions, where she offered guidance and spiritual support that strengthened the group’s mission and inspired its members.

“Acharya Shri Chandanaji’s life is a beacon of selfless service and spiritual strength,” said Atul Shah, president of JAINA. “Her contributions to humanity and her unwavering blessings to our community will forever remain a source of inspiration.”

JAINA extended condolences to the Veerayatan family, her disciples, and the global Jain community, stating that while her physical presence will be missed, her legacy will continue to guide humanitarian efforts worldwide.

The government has directed that her last rites be conducted with full state honors, recognizing her lifelong contributions to society and service.
