Less than a month after being arrested for protesting against New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed changes to New York’s climate law, Indian American New York comptroller candidate Raj Goyle has received endorsements from Climate Action Groups, New York Communities for Change and Sunrise Movement.

Goyle, who has taken Climate Action as a key pillar in his campaign trail, hit out at energy providers National Grid and Con Ed for rising energy prices and accused them of “burning down the planet”.

Highlighting his campaign promises, Goyle said, “How about we have a comptroller that's not a roadblock for change, but an engine for change.”

He continued, “That's why I'm proud to stand with the Sunrise Movement, who stood for the Green New Deal, to stand with New York Communities for Change, led the fight for affordable housing, taxing the rich.”

At the campaign rally Goyle declared, “It is the moral right for people in Buffalo in Brooklyn, in the Rockaway, to breathe clean air, to pay for their utility bills, to have a climate that they can pass on to their children.”

He continued, “We are going to divest from fossil fuels, bombs and explosions on day one. We're going to audit these companies. We're not paying for these AI data centers.”

Goyle also announced his plans to invest in green technologies. He said, “How about clean energy that not only gives our pensioners a good investment and a good return and grows their money, but it protects our climate.”

NYCC Organizing Director Santosh Nandabalan described Goyle as someone who believes that immigrants and working class people are welcome in the city, highlighting Goyle’s stance on immigration and affordability. Nandabalan also expressed the organization’s backing and said that they were excited to see Goyle as the State’s new Comptroller.

NYCC is one of the largest community organizations in the country. It fights for multiple issues related to jobs, housing, public safety, climate action and immigrant rights.

Sunrise Movement’s State Legislative Lead, Kiana Ziadkhanpour, endorsed Goyle and said, “We need someone like Raj at the state level to advocate for all our needs for a livable future. We at Sunrise are happy and proud to endorse Raj and be a part of this campaign.”

Formed in 2017, Sunrise is a movement of young people to end billionaire rule and stop the climate crisis. It shot to fame after it led a sit-in with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at Nancy Pelosi’s office, demanding a Green New Deal.
