Government shutdown imminent after Senate blocks stopgap bills

Congress hurtled toward a government shutdown Sept. 30 as the Senate failed to approve temporary spending measures and lawmakers abandoned town, leaving federal agencies to brace for closures and furloughs.
Senators voted down duelling stopgap bills, including a 55–45 rejection of a House-passed continuing resolution that was widely viewed as the last realistic option to keep the government funded through November. With the deadline approaching at midnight, leaders acknowledged there was no path to avert a lapse.
