Indian-origin Democratic Congress members have come out in jubilation after President Donald Trump replaced Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on March 5, after spending months pushing for her ouster through the legislative route.
Noem's dismissal and her reassignment as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, Trump's new security initiative in the Western Hemisphere that he will be announcing on March 7 in Doral, Florida, comes amid a heightened bipartisan push for her impeachment over the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal officers in Minneapolis and lawmakers' questions over a $220 million advertising contract in which Noem starred.
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal described Noem's ouster as "good riddance" and remarked on X, "Kristi Noem has overseen a lawless DHS that killed two Americans in the street, put children in prison camps, separated families, detained U.S. citizens, led to 41 deaths in custody, and wasted millions of taxpayer dollars."
Jayapal also argued that Noem's dismissal was not sufficient and rehashed her push for a freeze on DHS funding. She said, "Congress still cannot fund DHS until there is real, tangible proof that this will be a meaningful, structural change."

Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi highlighted the significance of the efforts made by Congress in pressuring the Trump administration and said, "Secretary Noem’s removal does not erase the abuses that occurred on her watch in the Trump administration. It only reinforces why Congress must continue demanding accountability."
Congressman Krishnamoorthi also called for foundational changes in DHS policies and remarked, "Changing the name on the door will not change the policies, the abuses, or the Trump administration’s rejection of congressional oversight. The American people deserve a Department of Homeland Security that respects the rule of law and answers to the public. We must abolish Trump’s ICE."

Changing the name on the door at DHS will not change the reckless, militarized immigration raids that have spread fear across our country.

In an X post celebrating Noem's firing, Congressman Suhas Subramanyam listed her alleged failures, claiming, "Kristi Noem should have been fired a long time ago... She was never fit to serve."
He listed, "Her corruption, self-dealing, and tolerance and advocacy for lawlessness at ICE were sufficient grounds for termination. On top of that, she fired high-performing, experienced federal workers and contractors in our community who kept our country safe."
"I am glad to see her go," said Representative Ami Bera. He alleged that Noem failed to keep Americans safe, which is the department's primary mission.
He continued, "We must restore leadership at DHS that respects the Constitution, due process, and the rule of law."
The Department of Homeland Security was created to keep Americans safe.

Kristi Noem failed to execute that mission. That’s why I supported her impeachment. I am glad to see her go.

Congressmember Shri Thanedar highlighted his prior appeal to Secretary Noem to resign and added, "Goodbye @Sec_Noem."
Trump, in his Truth Social announcement, thanked Noem for her service and noted that Noem had served well and "has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!)."
Noem will be replaced by U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin, effective March 31.
