Former rival Andrew Horne endorses Amish Shah in Arizona race

The endorsement comes days before Democrats choose their nominee in Arizona's closely watched 1st Congressional District primary.

Arizona democrat Andrew Horne, who campaigned against Amish Shah in the 2024 primary for the state’s 1st Congressional District, has endorsed Shah's 2026 campaign.

In his endorsement, Horne reflected on their 2024 primary contest, during which they campaigned across the district, shared debate stages and met many of the same voters.

Although they differed on some policy issues, Horne said his support was rooted in Shah's character, work ethic and approach to public service.

"We do not agree on every policy, and we do not have to. What matters to me is something more important: character, work ethic, and the ability to listen," Horne said, describing Shah as "smart, ethical, kind, and hardworking."

Horne also praised Shah's willingness to explain his decisions and engage with opposing viewpoints. "What I respect about Amish is that he can explain how he gets to a decision... He is a critical thinker, and if you want to understand his reasoning, he is happy to share it," Horne said.

Horne concluded by urging Democratic voters in Arizona's 1st Congressional District to support Shah in the July 21 primary.

Shah, a former Arizona state representative and emergency physician, won the Democratic nomination for the district in 2024 before losing to Republican Rep. David Schweikert in the general election. He is seeking the nomination again in what has become a closely watched Democratic primary.

Arizona's 1st Congressional District is an open-seat race this year after Schweikert opted to run for governor instead of seeking reelection. The Democratic field includes Shah, former television anchor Marlene Galán-Woods, Rick McCartney, Jonathan Treble and others.

The race has also drawn national attention after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee endorsed Galán-Woods over Shah, despite Shah being the party's 2024 nominee. The winner of the July 21 primary will advance to the November general election in one of the nation's most competitive House districts.
