Indian American economist Yogesh Uppal has been appointed as an associate editor of the international academic journal, ‘Economics of Governance.’

The appointment was extended by the journal’s editors-in-chief, Thushyanthan Baskaran and Felix Munoz-Garcia. 'Economics of Governance' publishes interdisciplinary research on the economic aspects of governance, with a focus on institutions, public policy, and organizational structures across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

"I am honored to join the editorial team at ‘Economics of Governance’," said Uppal, who serves as a professor at Youngstown State University's (YSU) Williamson College of Business Administration (WCBA).

"The journal fosters research at many levels of governance, including corporations, nonprofit organizations, local and federal governments, and international institutions, and brings together economists, organizational scholars, and political scientists. It is a premier outlet for high-quality, interdisciplinary research on governance as a key driver of business, economic, and political outcomes," he added.

As an associate editor of the journal, the Indian American economist will oversee manuscript submissions in his areas of expertise, including coordinating peer review, assessing scholarly rigor, and making publication recommendations alongside the editors-in-chief.

Uppal’s research focuses on the intersection of economic development, public policy, and institutional governance. His work examines how political and institutional factors shape economic outcomes, including studies on election cycles, legislative turnover, and public service delivery, with research drawing on data from India and the United States.

“My research aligns well with the journal’s commitment to understanding how public and private institutions function and how they shape the outcomes we care about,” Uppal said. “I am excited to contribute to the journal’s mission by helping curate scholarship that is both methodologically rigorous and practically relevant to today’s global challenges.”

Interim WCBA dean Christina Saenger said the appointment reflects the broader impact of Uppal’s work. "We are incredibly proud of Yogesh Uppal's invitation to serve as an associate editor for Economics of Governance," Saenger said.

"This role reflects the impact and relevance of his work, particularly his ability to connect rigorous theory to the practical challenges of leadership and accountability," she added.

Uppal said the role also supports teaching and student development. "This role allows me to bring the latest research directly into the classroom," he said. "It helps students understand not only how economic models work, but how ideas are debated, refined, and applied by scholars around the world."

Uppal holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Irvine, a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi. Uppal teaches in the Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance at Youngstown State University and directs the MS in Business Analytics program.
