The Washington University in St. Louis named Ravi Vij, an Indian-American physician-scientist specializing in blood cancers as the inaugural Jeffrey S. and Prue H. Gershman Distinguished Professor in the John T. Milliken Department of Medicine.
Vij, a professor of medicine in the Division of Oncology, was formally installed during a ceremony led by chancellor Andrew D. Martin and David H. Perlmutter, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of WashU Medicine. The professorship was established through a gift from St. Louis philanthropists Jeffrey and Prue Gershman.

Vij treats patients at Siteman Cancer Center, based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine, and has spent his career researching and developing treatments for blood cancers, particularly multiple myeloma.
As principal investigator of the Multiple Myeloma Tissue Banking initiative at Siteman, Vij leads research examining the genetic and cellular characteristics of the disease. He has also led clinical trials involving immunotherapies and stem cell transplant strategies that later became part of standard treatment approaches for blood cancers. Over the course of his career, he has authored more than 300 scientific publications.
“Through this professorship, their generosity will accelerate progress against blood cancers by supporting Dr. Vij’s work to bring new, more effective treatments to patients. His leadership has helped grow WashU Medicine’s reputation as a national force in stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy, and with the Gershmans’ support, that momentum will continue,” University chancellor Martin said in a statement to university press.
Vij has held leadership roles with several national organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. He currently serves as senior editor of the journal Clinical Lymphoma, Myeloma and Leukemia.
In addition to his research and clinical work, Vij has mentored 25 early-career researchers and received the Teacher of the Year Award from WashU Medicine’s Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program in 2007.
A graduate of Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, Vij joined the WashU Medicine faculty in 2000 after completing oncology, hematology and bone marrow transplantation training at the institution.
