The U.S. Embassy in India announced that passport and visa services will continue amid the American government shutdown “as the situation permits.”

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the embassy said in a statement on X.

It further clarified that the routine updates on its official social media accounts will remain suspended until full operations resume.  Only urgent safety and security information will be posted until normal operations resume.

While certain essential functions continue during the funding lapse, several agencies are set to face disruptions.

In the case of immigration, experts have noted that although embassies and consulates remain open, delays could emerge in visa categories that depend on interagency processes, such as the H-1B program, where the Department of Labor’s certification is a critical step. Reports have already indicated that labor condition applications may be impacted until funding is restored.

However, with the embassy limiting its communications on social media, applicants have been advised to rely on official State Department channels for real-time updates.
