Indian-origin researcher Parag Deotare has been appointed the Chen-Luan Family Faculty development professor of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at the University of Michigan.
Deotare’s appointment highlights his groundbreaking research in manipulating nanoscale energy transfer for next-generation semiconductor and quantum device applications.
His lab’s innovations include a room-temperature optoexcitonic switch enabling controlled exciton flow, quasiparticle-driven on-chip data transport, and tamper-proof memory chips designed for hardware security.

Deotare, who currently serves as the associate professor at the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, also serves as deputy director of 'QuPID,' the NSF-funded National Quantum Virtual Laboratory center.
He is also the co-chair of the upcoming '2026 Fundamental Optical Processes in Semiconductors Conference' and editor of the book '2D Excitonic Materials and Devices.'
“Professor Deotare’s contributions have positioned U-M at the forefront of optoexcitonics and reshaped the field, which has the potential to be a platform for next-generation device development and hardware security,” said Karen Thole, the Robert J. Vlasic dean of engineering, in her recommendation.
A University of Pune alumnus, Deotare completed his bachelor’s degree in 2004 before pursuing graduate studies in the U.S. He holds four U.S. patents and has authored more than 115 research papers. His achievements have earned him several honors, including the '2017 U.S. Air Force Young Investigator Award' and the '2025 EECS Outstanding Achievement Award.'
Known for his engaging teaching style, he was voted 'HKN Professor of the Year' by ECE students in 2017, soon after joining Michigan. He now leads advanced quantum laboratory courses under the new QuEST master’s program.
The Chen-Luan Family Faculty Development Professorship, established in 2023 by University of Michigan alumni Enke Chen and Huiyi Luan, supports emerging and mid-career faculty in engineering and honors Chen’s Ph.D. advisor, Stephane Lafortune. Deotare is scheduled to deliver a public lecture on his work later this year.
