The event marked a historic milestone that came after decades of effort by community leader Deelip Mhaske and countless Ambedkarites across the world.
Mhaske had previously helped organize the first-ever celebration of Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In 2016, with special permission from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ambedkar Jayanti was formally observed at the UN for the first time, giving Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals of equality, dignity, and democracy an official voice on the world stage.
Deelip Mhaske celebrated the unveiling and said, “It is a matter of immense pride that today, on Constitution Day, a bust of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was unveiled at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.”
He added, “For me, this is not just an event—it is the fulfillment of a promise I made to myself in 2006. This is a tribute to Babasaheb, and to every person who ever felt unseen and still chose to keep fighting.”
Mhaske paid a special tribute to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, whom he met last month along with the Governor of New Jersey and the First Lady, for gifting the bust of Dr. Ambedkar to UNESCO, helping transform years of advocacy into a concrete reality.
