The United Arab Emirates and India on Nov. 27 signaled a push toward tighter consular coordination during the sixth meeting of their Joint Consular Committee, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi.
The session, co-chaired by UAE Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Omar Obaid Alhesan Alshamsi and India’s Secretary for Consular Affairs Arun Kumar Chatterjee, focused on service delivery upgrades, experience sharing, and greater deployment of technology to support citizens of both countries.
Officials examined operational measures to simplify consular procedures, reinforce welfare and protection frameworks, and accelerate digital adoption to improve efficiency.
Delegates from India also visited the UAE’s “Smart Mission,” described as the world’s first AI-integrated consular ecosystem, which applies artificial intelligence, biometrics, and real-time data tools across UAE missions.
Alshamsi conveyed greetings from the UAE foreign minister and underscored that the committee’s regular engagement reflects both governments’ intent to advance the strategic partnership.
The talks took place amid expanding people-to-people mobility. An estimated 3.9 million Indian nationals live in the UAE, forming its largest expatriate group and contributing across sectors including construction, healthcare, technology, and finance. The UAE remains a key remittance source for India, and bilateral non-oil trade crossed $50 billion in 2024–2025.
Both delegations called the discussions “highly productive” and committed to fast-tracking follow-up actions before the next committee session.
