White House adviser and architect of President Trump’s tariff policy, Peter Navarro, intensified his criticism of India in a recent Fox News interview, accusing the country's Brahmin community of profiting from Russian oil purchases.
When specifically asked if the 50% tariffs on India were sufficient to choke Vladimir Putin, Navarro responded that the administration does not want to go higher, noting:
"We have 50% on China too, and going higher could hurt America." He then pivoted to India, calling the country the “Maharaja of Tariffs.”
Navarro also took a pot shot India with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, stating:
"Modi is a great leader, but I do not understand why he is getting in bed with Putin and Xi Jinping when India is the world’s largest democracy. I would say to the Indian people: you have Brahmins profiting at the expense of the Indian people, and we need that to stop."
Earlier in the interview, Navarro expressed hope that the Supreme Court will side with the Trump administration in keeping the tariffs in place.
The tariffs have significantly impacted India's economy, with sectors like textiles, seafood, and jewelry facing severe challenges. A Crisil Ratings report forecasts a 15-18% decline in Indian shrimp exports for the fiscal year due to the tariff hike, threatening a $5 billion trade sector. Additionally, foreign institutional investors withdrew ₹34,993 crore from Indian equities in August, marking the steepest monthly outflow of the year.
Navarro's comments have sparked controversy, with critics accusing him of using divisive rhetoric. Recent comments by Trump administration officials have been watched very closely by New Delhi, which has chosen not to respond.
Prime Minister Modi, currently in China, is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin.
