The Consulate General of India in Toronto liberalized the process by which cremated remains (ashes) are transported to India, CGI Toronto announced on March 12.
Previously, rules mandated the submission of a death certificate for such transportation; however, this proved difficult for many as it entailed a time-consuming process.
Notifying the new rules, CGI Toronto said, “Any of the documents, viz. death certificate OR statement of death OR Form 16 (for Ontario residents) OR a burial permit shall henceforth be recognized as a valid document for transportation of cremated remains (ashes) to India.”
It added, “We remain committed to the welfare of our community and will continue to work towards making every process accessible and supportive.”

The transportation continues to require other forms including a no objection certificate; cremation certificate; certificate of packing, indicating name, age, date, time and cause of death, and contents of the package; original passport of the deceased; and name, address and passport particulars of the person taking the ashes.
In addition to these documents and their copies, transportation of the mortal remains of Indian nationals would additionally require a Registration of Death form.
