Stanford's Rhiju Das uses games to detect TB

The work centers on RNA molecules designed by players of Eterna, a Stanford-created game where users solve molecular puzzles

Biochemist Rhiju Das, an Indian-origin researcher at Stanford Medicine, led a study using designs from an online video game to develop a low-cost test for active tuberculosis, according to research released Feb. 25, 2026.

The work centers on RNA molecules designed by players of Eterna, a Stanford-created game where users solve molecular puzzles. Das and collaborators used those designs to build a molecule that identifies whether tuberculosis has shifted from a dormant to an active state, a transition difficult to detect with current diagnostics.
