In an attempt to prepare the community amid significant uncertainty and rising alarm for immigrant families, with the U.S. administration pushing for tougher immigration enforcement, the Sikh Coalition launched a guide for Sikh community members who are in need of immigration-related help.

Available in both English and Punjabi and named "The Immigrant Family Preparedness Guide," the resource will provide families of all immigration statuses with clear, accessible information and practical steps.

The resource book outlines the roles of different immigration authorities and identifies potential sources of legal guidance for individuals navigating immigration-related issues. It also provides essential "Know Your Rights" information for interacting with immigration officers in a variety of situations.

Additionally, the guide offers practical advice for families preparing for a potential immigration arrest, including planning for children's care, organizing travel documents and discussing these matters with dependents. It further includes recommendations on financial preparedness and tips for centralizing and formalizing important family documents to ensure continuity and stability during immigration-related emergencies.

The guide also includes a comprehensive list of legal, KYR, mental health and community resources. Where possible, it also details location-specific information for states with significant Sikh populations, such as New York and California.

Introducing the guide, Harman Singh, executive director of the Sikh Coalition, said in a letter to the community, "This Family Preparedness Guide was created by the Sikh Coalition to provide clear, accessible and practical information for families during a time of profound uncertainty."

He continued, "Unexpected immigration enforcement and related emergencies can create fear, stress and confusion for many immigrant families, but planning ahead can help them feel more prepared and supported. In this way, careful preparation becomes an act of care and love for ourselves, our loved ones and our communities."

"It can be difficult for families with mixed immigration status to consider the worst-case scenario," said Aasees Kaur, Sikh Coalition community development director.

Kaur added, "Even so, in a time of increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement, including the detention of people who are lawfully present in this country, thorough preparation can help families make informed decisions before a crisis occurs. It is our hope that this guide can serve as a starting point for families and provide them a pathway to asking the right questions and consulting with vetted resources."
