Sewa International launches Spokane wildfire relief drive
The first phase of the effort will provide basic household essentials to families beginning the recovery process.

Sewa International USA launched a relief fundraiser to provide essential bedding to families affected by the Spokane Complex Wildfires in Washington state.
The organization’s first phase of disaster recovery efforts in Spokane Valley will provide 100 mattresses, along with pillows and blankets, to 100 Native American tribal families impacted by the wildfires.

Sewa International USA volunteers will distribute the bedding to affected families as they begin rebuilding after the fires. The organization said the effort is focused on addressing immediate household needs and providing comfort and stability to survivors.
The initiative comes as communities in the Spokane area recover from a major wildfire outbreak that forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate and caused extensive property damage.
The fires, which broke out Aug. 1, burned about 10,000 acres and destroyed or severely damaged more than 900 homes. At the height of the emergency, about 64,000 people were under evacuation orders.
Nearly 1,700 firefighters were involved in battling three major fires in the Spokane area as crews worked to contain the flames and protect residential communities. By Aug. 9 and 10, conditions had improved enough for many evacuees to begin returning home, although cleanup and recovery efforts continued in the hardest-hit areas.
The fires caused widespread destruction in residential neighborhoods, leaving many residents facing the longer-term challenges of replacing household belongings, securing housing and rebuilding their lives.
The wildfire outbreak also came during a severe fire season in Washington state, with hot, dry and windy conditions complicating firefighting efforts.
As the immediate emergency response gives way to longer-term recovery, Sewa International said additional assistance will be needed as affected families work to regain stability.
The organization said the initial mattress distribution is part of a broader disaster recovery effort and that future phases of relief will address additional needs as they emerge.
